San Foundation Funds Innovative UVC Disinfection Robot

THOR UVC® is a UVC emitting robot designed for all areas of the hospital and healthcare environment and has been embraced by the orthopaedic surgeons at the Sydney Adventist Hospital.

Head of Orthopaedic surgery Dr Rod Brooks is a key advocate for the new system as he sees this as an extra safeguard to the usual cleaning routine.  This is particularly important when bone or joint infections can be so debilitating and hard to eradicate.

How does the THOR UVC® robot work?

Constant Wave UV-C is proven to kill known pathogens.

Ultraviolet (UV) light is divided into three sub-ranges, A, B, and C. UV-C encompasses the wavelength range 200-280nm and is selectively absorbed by DNA, RNA and proteins of microorganisms.

Absorption of UV-C by microorganisms disrupts their DNA/RNA replication process leading to their inactivation[1].

Removes guesswork and ineffectiveness of regular cleaning

THOR UVC® removes the guesswork for the operator by generating a room map and assisting with optimal room positioning. Robotically extending to reduce shadows, the THOR UVC® will rapidly deliver a powerful and calculated dose of constant wave UV-C energy from floor to ceiling. With a Log 6 (99.9999%) bacterial kill achieved in minutes[2], use of the THOR UVC® can reduce terminal cleaning times, improve patient flow times in the Operating Theatre, and improve efficiency of commercial cleaning teams.
